Monthly talks at the Helmsley Archaeological and Historical Society resume next week after the Christmas break with Dr John Kenyon (Honorary Research Fellow with the National Museum of Wales) on the subject of “Helmsley Castle – fortress or home?”
This talk will examine the history of the building of the castle, and discuss whether Helmsley should be seen as more stately home than fortress. Its role in early modern times, along with other castles of the period, will be touched upon. The talk will also stress that there is more to be learnt!
Dr Kenyon is one of the UK’s leading authorities on castles, has written and edited a number of books and academic papers on this theme, and is the author of the English Heritage guide to Helmsley Castle.
Friday 18th January 2018, 7.30pm, at the North York Moors National Park Authority Committee Room, Bondgate, Helmsley. New members are always welcome, and visitors may attend individual talks for a small donation.
