Kirkbymoorside FC - new website

Folk can keep up with all the latest fixtures, results and news by having a look from time to time. Anyone can view it but I would recommend that they actually join up and become a site member, probably as a supporter, which will then allow them to take an active part in the Forum discussion and also to add comments to news items and match reports.

Another good feature for those who sign up is that they can enjoy an on-line shopping experience by selecting SHOP in the middle of the menu bar at the top. This will open up a wide range of on-line stores including all the household names like Argos, JJB Sports, Debenhams, Amazon and many more. Any members that make purchases via the KMSFC website will then generate funds for the football club through a cash-back scheme. We are hoping that this might provide an additional income stream for the club.

Visit the site.

Latest Kirkbymoorside Camera Club image

Thank you to Club Chairman, Harry Kingman, who took quite a few images during the recent triathlon event at Castle Howard.

The stunning surrounding scenery with Castle Howard’s 10,000 acres forms arguably the most physically challenging triathlon course of the series. Triathletes start the race by swimming the Castle Howard Great Lake before transitioning into the technical cycle route. With one lap for the Sprint and two laps for both the Mid and Olympic distance the cycle leg passes through the undulating countryside surrounding the estate. Triathletes run through the estate, taking in the historic monuments along the way, again with one lap for the Sprint and two laps for the Mid-Distance and Olympic races. The race ends with triathletes literally running into the front entrance of this truly magnificent Castle. Find out more about the castle triathlon series here.

Shooting company fined over damage to Farndale

A field sports company has been fined £40,000 after damaging part of the North York Moors National Park.

The prosecution, brought by Natural England, related to pheasant shooting in Farndale.

York Sports Ltd and its director, Michael Wood, admitted a total of seven offences at separate court hearings last year.

They failed in a court challenge over the extent of the damage caused and were each fined £20,000.

Farndale is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), and is well-known for its wild daffodils.

Kirkbymoorside Junior Football Club - Presentation Day 2011

Despite the rain a wonderful afternoon was put on by the managers, coaches and volunteers for the club's young players and their families. With now around 170 players, both boys and girls, the club is probably the biggest operating in the town and is certainly one of the most successful. On this video you'll see the fun and games that were laid on for everyone to enjoy followed by the award ceremony when the efforts of all were recognised. Special mention should be made of the coaches and other volunteers who give up so much of their time to give the youngsters such a great opportunity to develop their footballing and social skills in a safe and supportive environment.

It's a long video, 45 mins, and a bit blurry due to the rain but hopefully you'll see some faces you recognise and get a sense of what a great time was had by all.

It's World Cup Weekend in Dalby Forest

Olympic and World Champions return to Yorkshire this weekend for a three day feast of mountain bike action at the 2011 UCI Mountain Bike Cross Country World Cup. Huge crowds will return to Dalby Forest to witness up close and first hand Britain’s best mountain bike event in full swing.

The action begins with the return of the adrenaline fuelled Pro Sprint Eliminator in Pickering on Friday (20 May) as the stars of cross country mountain biking go head to head for UCI points. The world’s best riders including Nino Schurter, who narrowly beat Julien Absalon in the Men’s elite race at Dalby Forest last year and went on to win the overall 2010 World Cup, will be joined on the start line by current elite cross country stars including Florian Vogel, and Britain’s U23 rider Kenta Gallagher. The women’s race will include British riders Annie Last, Lily Matthews and Downhill World Champion Tracy Moseley.

The fireworks in the forest begin with Dalby Dare on Saturday (21 May) in a 20km ride that gives riders the chance to tackle a lap of the no.1 ranked cross country course in the series under World Cup conditions, before heading off deep into the forest to sample a hand-picked selection of rocky, rooty technical trails. To find out more about Dalby Dare and to register, click here. Saturday also marks the start of the racing in Dalby Forest as a number of the sport’s future stars take to the course in the junior races and Men’s U23 race where Britain’s Dave Fletcher will be hoping to improve on his impressive eighth in South Africa.

On Sunday (22 May), the world’s best riders will battle it out as the weekend reaches its peak in the Elite Men’s and Women’s World Cup races. Last year’s action saw the reigning world champions take victory in both events. They were absolute classics with an outstanding men’s event settled only in the last few metres in one of the closest finishes in World Cup history. This year the races are expected to go to the wire once again with the likes of Britain’s Liam Killeen, Nino Schurter, Jose Hermida Ramos, Julien Absalon, Maja Wloszczowska and Irina Kalentieva all hoping to be first over the line.

Tickets at this point are only available on the day - prices.

Video: the Kirkbymoorside 10K - May 1st, 2011

A runner's favourite the Kirkby 10K again drew a field of over 400 on a lovely sunny day with just enough wind to keep everybody reasonably cool.

Here's feedback from one the athletes who obviously thoroughly enjoyed their day:

"Definately my favourite race of the year - but was pretty devastated with my time this year. Hot & windy (the weather that is) and not enough training due to injury.

However will be back next year without a doubt - the whizz down the hill into the town at the end makes it all worthwhile. Fabulous marshalls, crowd support & organisation as always so my thanks to all - not forgetting the brass band members. Oh and also the people that allow their yard to be used as a car park."

Apologies for the quality of the video - the new software update isn't as good as that it replaced - hope you can get a flavour of a wonderful event along with the children's races and the tractor run which launched the day.

Every Wednesday local fitness instructor Andy Gamble will be running a variety of taster sports sessions for you to try out. His aim is for local people to have a go at activities that you might otherwise not consider.

This week on May 11th it is Tag Rugby, then on May 18th it's Football and on the 25th it's Rounders - all at the sportsfield starting 6.30 for an hour.

Last-gasp goal seals Ryhope cup glory over Kirkby

Wearside League leaders Ryhope CW celebrated winning the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup yesterday with a last-ditch extra-time winner at Kirkbymoorside yesterday.

The Yorkshiremen, third-from-top, matched the Wearsiders throughout an enthralling two hours but just when it appeared the tie would be decided by penalties, Jonathan Davies became Ryhope’s hero.

A throw-in was knocked on and Davies ran in at the far post to head past goalkeeper Adam Magson and send Ryhope supporters delirious.

John Butler had the ball in the home net on 29 minutes but was shown a yellow card for handling and six minutes later Chris Trewick almost grabbed the lead for Ryhope but his effort rattled the crossbar.

Martin Swales’ side had more of the play but there was a scare on the hour when the home side were awarded a penalty for a foul on prolific scorer Ryan Rivis. Rob McDirmid’s kick was saved by goalkeeper Neil Atkinson and Ryhope breathed a sigh of relief.

In the first period of extra-time Magson made a great double save from Nathan O’Neil and Butler and after 112 minutes, Liam Cooper’s shot was blocked on the Ryhope line.

With only a minute of extra-time remaining, Davies came up trumps and Ryhope claimed their first silverware of the season. Source

Note: Adam Magson, Kirkbymoorside keeper, was rightly named Man of the Match after pulling off several magnificent saves - the match officials said they had not seen a better goalkeeping performance all season so well done Adam!

It was a great afternoon despite the loss. Our team played really well, especially considering they had played four games in the last eight days in the run up to this. It was sad to lose but the crowd of 300+ went home feeling really proud of the lad's achievement. Thanks very much to Bob Gardiner for the photo of Adam in action above - more will be added when Mal Mudd's match report arrives.

Cup Final - today in Kirkbymoorside!

The Monkwearmouth Cup Final between Kirkbymoorside FC and Ryhope CW FC is to be played at Kirkbymoorside today, Easter Monday (25th April) with a 1.30pm kick off.

Don't miss it!

Sure to be a cracking game and well worth people going just to get a look at the trophy. It is one of the oldest in the country (first contested in 1889) and is huge. It is also solid silver and worth a fair bit, I believe the insurance value is around £10,000.

Admission will be £2 with all proceeds going to the Monkwearmouth Hospital Charity. There will be a matchday programme on sale and the usual hot/cold drinks and burgers/chips etc etc will be available as will a few KMS FC items such as scarves/ mugs/ pin badges. We are hoping for a good crowd and KMS FC will benefit from raffle/ drinks sales etc.

Do come down to the ground and support your home town - with a bit of luck we may get a crowd of 300 or more!

Kirkbymoorside 3 Willington 2

The Moorsiders stretched their winning run to six games with this victory against mid table Willington on Wednesday night and in doing so enhanced the chances of a top four finish. They are currently in third but Redcar Athletic and New Marske have games in hand. Kirkby went into this game with more changes to the line-up, Ryan Cooper was not deemed ready to return and Rob McDermid was left out of the starting line up after the battering he got on Monday. Also missing were Matty Bower after his injury on Monday and a late blow was the absence of the Strickland twins through work. The good news was the return of Ryan Rivis after missing Monday’s game and he had a new strike partner in the shape of Liam Cooper. There was also a seasonal debut for Chris Hodgson who slotted into midfield.

Kirkbymoorside FC 2 (0) Silksworth FC 0 (0)

Kirkby earned another three points with this victory over Silksworth to consolidate their placing at the top end of the table and keep them in good shape for the busy period coming up next week when there are vital games at home to New Marske on Monday, Willington on Wednesday and Easington on Saturday. With an eye on these games manager Alex Strickland shuffled the pack and rested both Ryan Cooper and Martin Cooper although the latter made a substitute appearance in the second half. A couple of players were unavailable and Uyi Ehima was missing through injury. Liam Cooper started again after his recent absence and Eddie Strickland made a return to the bench after his recent holiday and although he didn’t actually get on the field, he appeared for the Reserves in the game against Gillamoor which followed.

Kirkbymoorside FC seek commercial manager

The town's successful team are looking to appoint a commercial manager to arrange sponsorship deals and grants for future development.

The Moorsiders currently play in the Wearside League, which is a step seven league in the National Pyramid system, and the next aim is the second division of the Northern League.

A club spokesman said: “The appointment of a commercial manager is a major development for the club.

“We feel that is what is needed now for the next step – floodlights, ground improvements, extension of playing facilities and improvements to their dressing rooms – funding is the magic word.”

Further details are available by phoning chairman John Harmer on 01751 432382. Source

Kirkbymoorside 3 Cleator Moor Celtic 1

The Moorsiders collected another three points with a powerful display on Saturday to consolidate their top 6 status. The win was only assured late on against a strong Cumbrian side which belied their lowly League placing and the visitors can be confident of moving up into mid table with more performances like this as they catch up with a huge backlog of fixtures, they still have 13 games to play. This was a truly all round team effort with the front pair chasing and harrying throughout and the midfield players producing some great football at times in addition to contributing all the goals. The Kirkby back four gave strong performances and for the most part restricted the visitors to shots from range although Cleator Moor were perhaps slightly unfortunate to hit the woodwork twice.
