Man on the Moors despoiling the countryside?

We recently posted an item about a new 3m high bronze sculpture by artist Sean Henry, entitled ‘Seated Figure’, which has been installed on the North York Moors, near Westerdale. Several comments followed, discussing whether or not this artwork spoiled, or enhanced, the natural environment.

One point for the ‘spoilers’ group which was not mentioned, or perhaps even considered by the people who installed the statue, is the resulting litter dropped by visitors: a recent count included two plastic bags, twelve cigarette ends, several sweet wrappers and assorted small items.

Why oh why can people not take their litter home?

If it gets people out on the moor enjoying the exercise and fresh air then it must be a good thing. Re rubbish: Put up a sign discouraging it

Agree entirely, though I fear the sort of people who drop rubbish are unlikely to be discourage by a notice. A bin would be good, but of course the problem of emptying it is probably too difficult.
