Tomorrow sees the return of Helmsley’s artisan food market, following on from its highly successful first opening in July. (Click here for a short video on Youtube)
Taking place on the 3rd Friday each month, Helmsley Indoor Market aims to showcase artisan food producers who are offering an unusual or specialist slant – for example organic, free-range, vegetarian or vegan, additive-free, gluten-free and sustainably sourced foods.
This month, meats will include locally produced free-range saddleback pork, Yorkshire dry-cured bacon, grass-fed hogget, gourmet scotch eggs, and a range of charcuterie and smoked meats (as well as organically fed smoked salmon).
Delicious vegetarian and vegan savouries will be on offer, alongside organic vegetables and jams, local honey and artisan bread.
Baking will include patisseries, cheesecakes and desserts, as well as a range of delicious cakes and pastries that just happen also to be gluten-free.
This month’s market offers a taste of West African cuisine, featuring fritters and ‘pockets’ filled with different fillings including jerk chicken as well as a vegetarian option.
Orchards of Husthwaite will also be there, with a range of artisan ciders, craft beers and fruit based liqueurs.
Helmsley residents Erica Rose and Steve Skelton, who are organising the market, are particularly keen to encourage very small scale or start-up food businesses.
“Although many of our stallholders are well-established, with their own followings, we really hope that Helmsley Indoor Market will help new local food businesses to start out and to grow in the same way,” said Erica. “We do have the option of expanding the market in the future, so we would be delighted to hear from new potential stallholders.”
